The Caribbean country of Haiti has gotten a lot of news coverage as of late for the devastating earthquake they endured in 2010. Along with the support and donations sent by people from around the world, something else was sent, something more sinister, GMO seed. Here are the facts!
-The Multinational Agricultural Corperation Monsanto sent a "gift" of sixty tons of genetically modified corn and vegetable seed. Though at first it seems a generous donation, after reviewing certain facts, we can see how Mansanto planned on taking advantage of Haiti and the horrible disaster they suffered.
-The seed is genetically modified and requires more water and fertilizer than normal, unmodified seed. Resources that are scarce, especially after an earthquake.
-The seeds are coated with toxic chemicals that should not be handled without the use of gloves and gas masks, a precaution that has not been adequately broadcast.
-The seeds could contaminate already scarce food and water sources with these toxic chemicals.
-The seed cannot be used as an animal feed, as is a common use with most natural seeds.
-The seeds also do not do well if used for a second season, which forces farmers to buy new seeds each year.
-In May of 2010 about 10,000 Haitian farms burned corn seed in protest of the genetically modified seed sent by Monsanto. Protesters can be seen in the photo above.
